Office furniture : The All Important Desk

Office furniture : The All Important Desk
Office furniture : The All Important Desk
The office desk has been a fixture in the business world for as long as people have been professionals. The first models may have come into existence somewhere in the far or Middle East. Office furniture style wasn’t conceived of at that time, but aspects of those past designs have definitely found their way into what we think of as the efficient modern office desk.

If you are looking for the origins of desk design in the office furniture style, you would need to focus on the 17th century, when the main purpose of a desk was to produce and secure documents. These desk were not just large planks tacked together to create a convenient writing space. They were the works of great artisans. Today we live in world where designs have become sleek and form fitting and functional; especially considering the function of the modern desk in the context of office furniture. The desk in an office building can be more than a simple necessity.

An upgraded version of the traditional writing and storage furniture seen in most offices is the computer desk; these are stripped, simple apparatuses built around that now indispensable office accessory, the personal computer. These are practically designed marvels but sometimes they are alien and overly modernized which can make them slightly cold and off putting. However, a good model will come with a sliding compartment for the keyboard and the mouse and a rack at the bottom level for a copier and or printer. These designs are not meant to convey a sense of power but efficiency.

An alternative to the computer desk is the modern oak desk. To a connoisseur of office furniture, , this desk bespeaks a sort of authority. The design is meant to allow the person sitting behind it the capacity to make decisions and delegate responsibility. Compared to the computer desk these are large and made of wood. In more fancy offices, they have been made of light weight stone. More commonly, the desk comes with an expanded writing surface and a 90 degree curved area designed for actual paper work.

Yet another design entered into the large list of conceptualizations found in office furniture style is the wooden home work desk. This design is classical in the choice of materials, but all together modern in its versatility and accessibility. This desk has everything. Unlike the modern oak it comes with drawers and functional compartments and rack and trays fit for the computer, keyboard and mouse as well as a place for the printer/copier. This desk is meant for the studious student and as an at home alternative for the professional.

There are as many designs for the desk as there are professionals and offices for them to inhabit. In the more traditional offices you will find rows of simple computing desks detached or built in to cubicles and at the end of the hall, over seeing all of them you’ll find a man sitting behind a large desk of wood, maybe oak. In more quirky environments, like say a design firm or gaming office you will find more avant-garde designs meant to reference ingenuity and creativity and an egalitarian sense of purpose to unite the whole office. When you shop for a desk for yourself or your company, ask yourself what exactly it is you are trying to say. A good desk can speak volumes.
